Affirm, in six questions

Over the last two years Affirm's margin improved sharply. Roughly seventy percent of that improvement came from the interest-rate cycle rather than from operations — and which of those two you believe decides what the company is worth. This teardown lays out the evidence for each of six questions and leaves the valuation call to you.

THE READ

One quarter looks excellent: revenue up a third, and RLTC is roughly half of it. But of the 63bp of margin improvement over two years, 45bp came from funding cost — the one input Affirm does not set. Credit provision contributed a further 25bp, and that is a genuine operating result. Read together: the business is getting better at its job, and it also got a large favour from the rate cycle. Which of those two you weight more heavily is most of the valuation question.
